Hall Of Famer Carlton Fisk Blasts Mark McGwire For Saying Steroids/HGH Didn’t Give Slugger A Boost
January 21, 2010 | Leave a Comment
“(McGwire) says, ‘Well, (the use of PEDs) doesn’t help eye-and-hand coordination.’ Well, of course it does. It allows you more acuity physically and mentally and optically. You are going to be stronger and you are going to be better,” Hall of Fame catcher Carlton Fisk told the Chicago Tribune.
“There’s a reason they call it performance-enhancing drugs. That’s what it does - performance enhancement,” Fisk told the paper. “You can be good, but it’s going to make you better. You can be average, but it is going to make you good. If you are below average, it is going to make you average. Some guys who went that route got their five-year, $35 million contracts and now are off into the sunset somewhere. Because once they can’t use (steroids and HGH) anymore, they can’t play anymore. And steroids, during that time, probably did as much to escalate players’ salaries as did free agency, as did arbitration, and all of that stuff.”

Sad Day For Baseball Great With Steroid/HGH Confession
January 12, 2010 | Leave a Comment
The strategy that Mark McGwire used Monday to lay out his admission to using steroids demonstrated that lessons were learned from other baseball stars who preceded him in making mea culpa about their drug use.
McGwire had been silent since his embarrassing refusal to discuss his steroid use during a Congressional hearing nearly five years ago. His strategy back then, concocted with avoiding prosecution on his mind, made him appear hapless and as guilty as if he had confessed. This time, McGwire and his handlers surely knew his credibility would be enhanced if he confessed before spring training and made himself widely available, not only on Monday but Tuesday. An interview with ESPN is to be scheduled, but because it’s not exclusive, its thunder will be muted. McGwire’s personality has usually been low key, and he has not always been comfortable with the news media. In his repeated confessions Monday, he had no defiance or anger, just sadness and tears.

PGA & HGH
November 4, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Doug Barron’s suspension for performance-enhancing drugs leads to more questions than answers. For one, is this an isolated incident or evidence of a widespread problem?
Are tour players taking steroids — or HGH or marijuana, or cocaine or any other drug? Who knows? The Tour certainly doesn’t. Say Barron really is the only one to fail a test in the 15 months the Tour has been running its program. All that proves is that he didn’t find one of the loopholes in the banned drug list. And if he’s not the first person to fail, the Tour’s drug testing program serves the exact, cynical purpose Yesalis said many sports leagues’ programs do. It’s all for show.

Senate Addressing Steroids/HGH
September 30, 2009 | Leave a Comment
At a Senate hearing Tuesday addressing the alarming proliferation of steroids within the relatively unregulated nutritional supplements industry, the CEO of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said his organization was weeks away from announcing a new initiative that will propose regulatory reform of the supplements industry and will have the support of major professional sports leagues.
“The FDA is overburdened,” Sen. Hatch said, referring to the Food and Drug Administration, which has struggled to keep up with the burgeoning industry of bodybuilding supplements. “I blame Congress for a lot of these things. We don’t give you enough support.”
Hopefully the professional sports leagues would sign on to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which oversees independent drug testing for American Olympic athletes. Although the professional leagues have teamed up with USADA to help fund research for human growth hormone (HGH) urine screening, they have largely shunned USADA’s anti-doping policies, which are much stricter than anything pro athletes face.

Miss South Dakota 2008: HGH & Steroids Have Huge Risk
September 24, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Although they may help break records, performance-enhancing substances aren’t worth the risk to athletes’ mental and physical health. That’s the message that was spread by Alexandra Hoffman when she was Miss South Dakota 2008. She’s still spreading it today. On Tuesday, she came to Yankton to share it with several local groups, including a speech at Mount Marty College’s Roncalli Center.
Other supplements, such as human growth hormone (HGH) are difficult to detect, anyway. “It’s so hard to test for HGH because it’s already in our body,†Hoffman said. “And so, for someone who tests us for HGH — and let’s say you just have more HGH than I do — well, where’s the cut-off? Where do we say, ‘If you have more than this level, you’re taking it’?†Hoffman said that although anabolic steroids and HGH are two of the most prevalent and dangerous performance-enhancing substances, they are by no means the only ones used by athletes. Caffeine, diuretics and alcohol used to excessive levels can count, as well, she said. “Keep in mind the levels of these drugs,†she said. “If you have a Mountain Dew and then go to practice, you’re not going to have an amazing practice because of the caffeine.†However, those enhancers don’t have the side effects of anabolic steroids, some of which include tumors, jaundice, hepatitis and depression.

Current State of HGH
August 31, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Writer Shaun Murphy exchanged emails with John T. Wendt, Associate Professor in the Ethics and Business Law Department of the University of St. Thomas, on the subject of HGH. Professor Wendt specializes in sports law and Olympic policies and business. His latest published work in the winter of ’09 was titled, “The Road to Beijing and Beyond: A Time of Transition in the War on Doping.â€
Professor Wendt described the current state of Human Growth Hormone. “There are a many misperceptions about Human Growth Hormone (HGH). For athletes it is promoted all over the internet saying that it will accelerate healing and rehabilitation following injury, and increases your cardiac output and athletic performance. Claims have been made that HGH is anti-aging or can even reverse aging.â€

Sports Writer Creates His Own HGH/Roid List
August 25, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Bill Reitz, Norfolk Sports Examiner writer put together his own steroid ” list of people he thinks must have use or are using performance enhancing drugs like steroids and human growth hormone (HGH). Here are a few on his “list”:
Rocky Balboa – Ok, first of all he went from being a pudgy, undefined blob at the outset of the original Rocky to looking like a Mr. Universe contestant by the time that Rocky III came out. Add to that the fact that he went after the heavy weight title at age 60 and what you have is the poster child for steroids and HGH.   (Rocky I -??? And Rocky Balboa)
HR Puffenstuff – look at the size of the head on that thing. Wasn’t that the knock on Bonds???
Dog the Bounty Hunter – What it would look like if David Lee Roth and Hulk Hogan had a love child.
For real though….what safe, legal HGH product tops them all? Click here to find out.

UFC Fighter Test Negative to HGH, Steroids
July 17, 2009 | Leave a Comment
The Nevada State Athletic Commission’s traditional fight-night drug testing (HGH, steroids, etc) netted no failed tests at UFC 98.
All fighters were tested for drugs of abuse (such as marijuana and cocaine), as well as anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancers.
As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported a few weeks prior to the pay-per-view event, the NSAC also administered random pre-UFC 98 drug tests to Edgar, Hughes, Matt Serra and Sean Sherk. All four competitors passed the tests.
The NSAC’s year-round testing was implemented in 2008. MMA fighters are subject to drug testing at any time – for just about any reason – throughout the year, regardless of whether or not the fighter is scheduled for an upcoming event. However, the testing is usually reserved for scheduled fighters.

Steroids & HGH Have Adverse Side Effects
July 9, 2009 | Leave a Comment
Young people everywhere, men and women alike – many of them athletes or athletic “wannabes†- are using anabolic steroids under the false premise that any potential adverse side effects will happen “to someone else†but not to them.
More than 15 years ago Dr. Robert Voy, the former chief medical officer for the U.S. Olympic Committee and former medical review officer for the NFL Players Association, estimated that 10-25% of high school preps were using steroids and hgh. “Kids as young as 12 and 13 are taking steroids,†said Voy, one of the leading experts on performance enhancing drug abuse. “And in my experience, many parents of steroid-using young athletes are completely oblivious of what their child is doing.†USA Today reported as far back as December 1990 that steroid use among college football players was as high as 29%. The mean projected rate of use among men was 14.7% and 5.9% for women at that time.
