A former professional cyclist who served a two-year suspension for doping pleaded guilty in federal court Wednesday to conspiracy to distribute two performance-enhancing drugs.

Joe Papp, 34, of Bethel Park, was selling human growth hormone (HGH) and another drug, erythropoietin, known as EPO, online. He will be sentenced by Chief U.S. District Judge Gary L. Lancaster on June 25. Mr. Papp could face an advisory sentencing range of 10 to 16 months in prison. He pleaded guilty to two counts of conspiracy for selling the substances between September 2006 and September 2007. During that time, Mr. Papp sold about $80,000 worth of drugs to approximately 187 customers.

The strategy that Mark McGwire used Monday to lay out his admission to using steroids demonstrated that lessons were learned from other baseball stars who preceded him in making mea culpa about their drug use.

McGwire had been silent since his embarrassing refusal to discuss his steroid use during a Congressional hearing nearly five years ago. His strategy back then, concocted with avoiding prosecution on his mind, made him appear hapless and as guilty as if he had confessed. This time, McGwire and his handlers surely knew his credibility would be enhanced if he confessed before spring training and made himself widely available, not only on Monday but Tuesday. An interview with ESPN is to be scheduled, but because it’s not exclusive, its thunder will be muted. McGwire’s personality has usually been low key, and he has not always been comfortable with the news media. In his repeated confessions Monday, he had no defiance or anger, just sadness and tears.

Colorado Springs pharmacy owner Thomas Bader knew he was breaking the law by importing and distributing human growth hormones from China, prosecutors charged Tuesday.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jaime Peña told a federal jury that Bader and a sales representative had an attitude as they pursued their illicit business.

“They told us we couldn’t do it so we did it anyway,” Peña said, describing that attitude in opening statements of a trial in which Bader, 67, is accused of conspiracy, smuggling and illegal distribution of the hormones. Prosecutors contend the hormones lacked U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval.

An Orlando pharmacy whose operators were snared nearly three years ago in an Albany County criminal probe has been implicated in an international network that federal authorities say smuggled human growth hormone from China to the United States, court records show.

The controversial drug is strictly regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Yet human growth hormone, or HGH, has been used by professional athletes, bodybuilders, celebrities and others who subscribe to its anti-aging and muscle rejuvenating effects.

A Canadian doctor who has treated many NFL players as well as Olympic medalists like Donovan Bailey and the world’s top golfer, Tiger Woods, is under criminal investigation in the United States. He is suspected of providing athletes with performance-enhancing drugs, according to several people who have been briefed on the investigation.

The F.B.I. investigation of Dr. Anthony Galea, a sports medicine specialist who has treated hundreds of professional athletes across many sports, follows his arrest on Oct. 15 in Toronto by the Canadian police. Human growth hormone and Actovegin, a drug extracted from calf’s blood, were found in his medical bag at the United States-Canada border in late September. Using, selling or importing Actovegin is illegal in the United States.

Swedish HGH Arrest

December 9, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Swedish police say they have arrested 40 people across the country after uncovering a ring dealing in human growth hormone (HGH).

Police spokesman Borje Ohman says those arrested include bodybuilders and fitness professionals aged between 20 and 45. Arrests were made Wednesday in the three major Swedish cities of Stockholm, Goteborg and Malmo, as well as nine smaller cities. Police started investigating in May, after customs officials found a large package of human growth hormone at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport. Doping crimes _ involving illegal sports-enhancing or muscle-boosting drugs such as steroids, testosterone and growth hormone _ are punishable in Sweden by up to four years in prison.

Human growth hormones (HGH) and drugs for erectile dysfunction were among illegal medicines seized in Northern Ireland as part of an international operation.

The Department of Health has confirmed the drugs were among those recovered as part of a clampdown on buying medicine over the internet. Operation Pangea Two involved investigations in 24 countries. Health Minister Michael McGimpsey has warned the public that purchasing such illegal drugs is “highly dangerous”. Other drugs seized included benzylpiperazine, a recreational drug which affects the body in a way similar to amphetamines. It is understood a number of people have been prosecuted as a result of the operation.

It was not the easiest of births. When government ministers, sports officials, athletes and scientists gathered at the Palais de Beaulieu in Lausanne in 1999 to thrash out the terms of a new, global anti-doping organization, there was little evidence of the harmony and cooperation that now exists in the fight against drug cheats.

Funded jointly by the IOC and national governments, WADA has also been able to co-ordinate the search for new methods of drug detection, having spent about £30 million on research projects since 2001. New tests for human growth hormone (HGH) and various forms of EPO have been among the results, while work is being funded to deal with the potential scourge of gene doping.

From the United States Attorney’s Office, District of New Hampshire
On July 27, 2009, Christopher Chase, of Lynn, Massachusetts, was sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment and three years of supervised release for his involvement in an Internet prescription drug scheme that distributed anabolic steroids, human growth hormone (HGH), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), and clenbuterol throughout the United States. A two-count indictment charged Chase and two codefendants with conspiracy and money laundering.

According to the indictment, Chase and his team illegally imported the drugs from overseas, primarily China, marketed them as body-building substances, and sold them without a prescription on various websites. Of course, FDA has not approved anabolic steroids, HGH, or IGF-1 for use in body-building activities, and clenbuterol is not approved for use in humans by FDA. Although some countries have approved it as a prescription-only bronchodilator, clenbuterol is known to be abused by bodybuilders for its weight-loss properties, according the the Department of Justice. The money from the sales of these drugs was sent to various merchant bank accounts that Chase had set up, and then laundered through foreign countries such as China and Moldova.
